SM The Ballad (stylized as S.M. The Ballad or S.M. THE BALLAD) is a South Korean ballad project group formed by S.M. Entertainment. The group's members are: TRAX's Jay, Super Junior's Kyuhyun, SHINee's Jonghyun and new member Jino. They are described as their label's Vocal Unit Group.

It was revealed that TRAX's Jay Kim, SHINee's Jonghyun, Super Junior's Kyuhyun and new singer Jino have formed a project group under their label.[1] Originally titled "When It Began", title song of S.M The Ballad, "Miss You" was written for SHINee as a duet. When SHINee's group name was still undecided, Onew and Jonghyun had already recorded the song in duet style featuring Minho's rap, intending to include the song in the debut album. Due to incompatibility with the album's image, however, there were plans to release the song as a single instead. That too did not materialize as planned, and with further changes in plan, the decision was to have TVXQ's Xiah Junsu, Super Junior's Kyuhyun and SHINee's Jonghyun perform it as a trio. With just 2 months before the album was to be released, JYJ released the declaration of leaving SM. The final plan was to include TRAX's Jay and new SM trainee Jino, and the song title officially becomes "Miss You". [2]
The ballad group held their debut performance on SBS's Inkigayo broadcasted on November 28, 2010.[3]
They released their debut album, Miss You on November 29, 2010.

On 4 January 2011, S.M. Entertainment, together with NEOWIZ Internet Corporation, Ltd, released an iPhone application which features S.M. The Ballad's 1st mini album 'Miss You'. Features of the app includes preview tracks of the album, 'Miss You', of which the full versions can be purchased, Image gallery and Clock, as well as the music videos for 'Miss You' and 'Hot Times'. The app can be purchased on iTunes.[5]
